Minecraft - Gothic Cathedral

Minecraft - Gothic Cathedral

We put this cathedral together using Minecraft instead of lego because we have very few limits as far as amounts of peices goes. when we started this design off, we were looking in a book that had the begining of a frame for the front face of the cathedral. everything else was made based on what we had heard about gothic cathedrals. the whole thing is our own design and it took us a few days to plan the rest of it after we had finished the front. we made a small market out in front of the cathedral to make it more like an actual cathedral. since most of them had a road leading up from the town square or market that would go directly to the cathedral. also, the interior was mad with benches and lighting to make it seem welcoming to the public. another way to make it seem open (like a real cathedral) was to add very large doorways on the front of it with large pillars (which we did). Another main component of a gothic cathedral  would be a rose window. we placed our rose window on the back of the cathedral just above the centre of the back wall. we also added a pulpit and a raised area for the preacher or priest to stand and speak to the people from. of course a very important componant of our cathedral would be the overall hight that it is. the highest peak is about 115 blocks (115m) up from the ground. that was a very important component to this cathedral that we added. just as it was important to make peaks. the final touch we added was a gothic cross on the middle of the front for the people to look at. over all, i think this assignment went very well and was very successful. we didnt come into any problems while working and everything went up as planned. A+

  1. Excellent work, Adam! I'm impressed by all the details you have tried to include, and appreciate some of the nice touches, such as the sounds of the animals in the market. The height of the Cathedral sure is impressive when you provide the view from the top! I have shared the link to your post with @jeb_ on Twitter, who is a developer for Minecraft -- I wonder if there is a way to have different colours of glass available for making windows in the future. Also, thank you for taking the time to move slowly through your video. It helps your viewers to take in the details and it doesn't give them a sense of motion sickness :)

  2. Hi Adam. I watched your Minecraft video of your cathedral creation and I found it amazing. You're absolutely right about the lack of limitations: I think that this medium allowed you to do show your understanding of gothic architecture much better than students can using Lego (although there have been some pretty awesome Lego creations for this assignment last year and this year.) I also found your blog post to be informative. Did you create the cathedral with a partner? I'm hoping that if our school ever gets set up for Minecraft that we can start a group and some of you will give lessons.~Mrs. Scott-Marciski

    1. yes i created this with a partner. (billy ray) we worked through the design mostly before we started and touched them up as we went along. i don't really know if lessons would be necessary considering the simplicity of minecraft, but hopfully whatever happens will work out.
